Rats often come in to see us with “lumps”. Mammary gland tumours are the most common type of tumour affecting our rat patients.
Approximately 85% of these (in rats) are benign “fibroadenomas” and do not spread elsewhere in the body. However, as demonstrated in the photo, they can rapidly grow in size and have a negative impact on mobility and general quality of life. Surgical removal is recommended, with restricted food intake post-surgery to help reduce the risk of recurrence.
